cPanel Reseller Hosting

cPanel reseller hosting. What is cPanel reseller hosting, and when you might use it? How do I use cPanel reseller hosting, and the advantages of using this type of service?

What is cPanel reseller hosting?

Let’s break this down in to components.

cPanel:

cPanel is a type of web hosting software. It’s been around since 1996 and has seen a lot of improvments, especially in the last few years. It’s very reliable and provides an easy to use interface to manage all things website, email and DNS related. cPanel usually runs on the LAMP stack (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP). Most websites on ther internet run on the LAMP stack. What this all means is that cPanel is very standard, very reliable, uses proven technologies and provides a set of facilities that allow full website, email and DNS related.

Reseller:

A reseller is a person that buys something from one party and sells that same thing to other parties. This model has been in use since the concept of money and trading came about. Some resellers add value to what they’re buying and selling. This makes it more appealing to the people that they then sell to. If we use an IT reseller as an example, they might buy RAM, a CPU, a base server, and some software. They’d then assemble the RAM, CPU and server, and then install the software. They’d then sell this on as a complete solution to their customers.

Hosting:

Hosting is a shortened version of web hosting. Web hosting servers contain hosting accounts. People use these hosting accounts, to deploy their websites and mailboxes within them. It’s often the case that many hosting accounts exist on one web hosting server. A web hosting server containing multiple hosting accounts, each belonging to different people is called shared hosting.

CPanel reseller hosting

If we put all three of the above together what we’ve got is a web hosting service that you can resell to your customers. Additionally, you can add value to this service by deploying services within the hosting accounts that you’re reselling. The type of services you might deploy would usually be websites and mailboxes that are used by your customers and relate to their business.

The main facility that cPanel reseller hosting provides, that standard cPanel hosting doesn’t is the ability to create hosting accounts. When using our cPanel reseller hosting you don’t need to make a purchase in advance of being able to create hosting accounts. Consequently, our reseller account can be used to create hosting accounts as and when you need to, without making any additional purchases.

When you’d use a reseller web hosting service

You would usually use a reseller web hosting services if you have the need to create hosting accounts as and when you gain new customers.

Hosting accounts can be created for each of your individual customers. This allows you to provide the customer with login details to their account, as it contains only their data. You don’t run the risk of inadvertently providing one customer with access to an account that contains another customers data.

Reseller hosting allows the creation of accounts without the need to maintain, license and administer an entire web hosting server. Reseller hosting is an option for smaller organisations, or those that lack the skillset required to maintain web hosting servers.

Web developers, SEO agencies, and web design houses often use cPanel reseller hosting. Reseller hosting is a maximum gain, minimum overhead service, due to the lack of administrative overhead. Organisations can focus on the services they provide to their customers, when using reseller hosting.

Reseller web hosting is also a viable option for web developers operating as individuals to provide customers with websites. Some of our reseller based customers provide these services to clubs and societies on a non-professional basis. Other customers use our reseller hosting to provide websites as a means to supplement their income in addition to a full time job in other areas. Reseller hosting is a suitable option when providing websites as a side business in addition to permanent employment. This is due to it’s reliability and the lack of administration and maintenance that’s required.

Users and privileges

There are usually two types of users that access a web hosting server. One type of users is one that makes use of services provided, to host websites and mailboxes. The other type of user maintains the server to make sure it all works correctly and remains secure.

In a shared hosting environment, there are lots of the first types of users. These are usually customers, making use of web hosting accounts. There are fewer of the second types of users (the ones that maintain the server). These are Systems Administrators, and work for the company that provides the web hosting service.

Shared web hosting restricts what the customers, or owners of hosting accounts can do. The owner of a hosting account would be able to create a mailbox, or deploy a website, but they wouldn’t be able to restart services or install software on the server as a whole. Owners of hosting accounts can’t create additonal hosting accounts on the server.

The Systems Administrators that maintain the server can do a lot more. They need to be able to do a lot more to be able to maintain the server. Systems Administrators can install and update software that runs on the server as a whole. They can also change the configuration of services running on the server (the web server, for example). Systems administrators can also create hosting accounts.

A reseller hosting user can carry out more actions than a standard web hosting account user. Reseller hosting users can’t carry out as many actions as a Systems Administrator.

A reseller hosting user can create hosting accounts and defines the resources that a hosting account user can use. A reseller hosting user can’t install software on the server as a whole, or change it’s configuration. This means that reseller users can do all they need to be able to provide their customers with hosting accounts, but they can leave the administration of the server as a whole to the Systems Administrators.

Reseller hosting users have more privileges that standard hosting account users, but only the ones beneficial to them. The privileges that reseller hosting users don’t have, they don’t really need or want, as they don’t tend to want the workload of a systems administrator. Reseller hosting users only really need and want to be able to create hosting packages and define what resources are provided by these hosting packages. A reseller account provides these privileges, without the additional burden of privileges they don’t need or want.

How to use reseller web hosting effectively

Our Pay As You Use Reseller Hosting is just that. The more accounts you deploy and the more disk space you use, and the more your reseller account costs. While this may sound ominous, the costs are low, and can either be passed on to your customers, or marked up, and then passed on.

The costs that you pay for this are:

  • £10 plus VAT per month base price
  • An additional 50p (plus VAT per month) per GB of disk space used (totalled across all accounts)
  • An additional 50p (plus VAT per month) per cPanel account (total number of all your accounts)

The easiest way to think of this is that if you provide a 1GB limited hosting account, and all disk space is used this costs you £1 plus VAT per month. Anything that you charge the customer above £1 plus VAT per month, is effectively profit made on their hosting account.

To provide some perspective, our Essentials Hosting package costs £29.99 plus VAT per year and has a 1GB disk space limit. This equates to £2.49 plus VAT per month. If you charged your customer the same, you’d make a profit of £1.49 per month per 1GB cPanel reseller account sold. That said, this would be a small amount of markup to apply if you’re offering supplementary services, or some kind of management or online services rather than just a hosting account.

After obtaining a reseller hosting account, defining hosting packages, their limits, and the respective pricing is one of the first steps a reseller hosting customer will carry out. When defining packages the limits that can be applied are:

  • Disk space (MB)
  • Bandwidth (MB)
  • FTP accounts (number of)
  • Email accounts (number of)
  • Maximum disk usage per email account (MB)
  • Mailing llists (number of)
  • Databases (number of)
  • Subdomains (number of)
  • Parked domains/aliases (number of)
  • Addon domains (number of)

Defining a set of packages, each with different limitations and prices allows you to define and upgrade path for your customers.

As your customers grow and need more disk space, or mailboxes, they’ll need to ask you to upgrade. As you upgrade them, and they use more disk space, this will increase the cost of your reseller hosting account. The use of predefined packages that vary in cost, allows you to charge your customers more, as they use more resources such as disk space.

As your customers grow, you can charge them more by means of upgrades, to cover the cost increase of your reseller hosting account.

Your reseller account can pay for itself if you set up packages with limits and charge appropriately. Your reseller account can also make you a month by month profit, based on hosting services alone.
